Wednesday 13 - "Horrifier"

Category: CD/Video Reviews

 Release Date:  October 7, 2022

“Horrifier” is Wednesday 13’s ninth full length release  and this is the bands best, most ambitious release to date.  Filled with anthemic rockers like, “You’re So Hideous” & “Good Day To Be A Bad Guy”, “Horrifier” is the quintessential Wednesday 13 record and will serve as the standard for all other recordings Mr. Motherf**ker will make.  That last statement is 100% my personal opinion and I state that based on how well written the songs on this record are.

"Horrifier" was produced and recorded by WEDNESDAY 13 with mixing and mastering by Brent Clawson.  Artwork  for the record was done by Jonny Bush.

In the bands new bio WEDNESDAY 13 states:
"The last three releases have seen the band explore new ground with heavier songs, drums, and vocals. Coming out of the Covid crisis, I promised I would not release a sad, depressing record. I wanted to make a fun, horror themed rock record that would be reminiscent of the first few WEDNESDAY 13 records. The new album is a fun, fast-paced, thriller!”

"Horrifier" is available for pre-order in the following formats:

Now without further ado, here’s a track by track breakdown of the new record.

“Severed” - This 56 second opener isn’t necessarily a “song” but more of an intro and it leads into the ultra heavy “Insides Out”

"Insides Out” - Thick riffs, heavy vibe, and chunky rhythms flavor this intense rocker.  Musically this one sounds like a horror movie set to music.

“Exhume and Devour” - An announcer opens this one with: “Behind these cemetery gates….” thus adding an old school horror movie vibe and this one sounds slightly like something off the second Murderdolls record.

“You're so Hideous” - This is the first single from the record and the video is an ode to “The Exorcist”.  This song is a heavy rocker but it also has pop sensibility and commercial appeal.  This is a standout track on the record.

“Good Day to Be a Bad Guy” - This one also has the old school Murderdolls feel to it and the guitar lick plays along with the chorus perfectly.  Wednesday 13 has always had a style that’s part punk, part metal and about the gory side of life.

“Return to Haddonfield” - As the title infers, this one is about the John Carpenter “Halloween” movie franchise.  This one could have been on the “Skeletons” record because it has a similar vibe and feel.

“Horrifier” - Fast, furious, and intoxicatingly intense.  This one pummels like a freight train and rocks extra hard.  The chorus has a Static-X feel.

“Hell Is Coming” - The guitar licks that start this song off are slightly southern rock, sexy, sleek, and slightly sleazy.  Don’t let that fool you though because this one is heavy as hell and the slightly southern rock feel goes away fast.

“Halfway to the Grave” - This one is reminiscent of early W.A.S.P. and this mid tempo rocker is a great deep cut that die hard W-13 fans will love.

“Christine: Fury in the Night” - this one was written about the Stephen King movie “Christine” and the lyrics reflect that very well.  Musically this one is fast and heavy.

By this point in the record you would assume that the entire record would be simply loud, fast, and heavy with nothing but themes of horror and gore.  The last song on the record is a rocker, but it’s mellower and offers an introspective look into Mr. 13’s life.

“The Other Side” - this one is a touching, sad number that Wednesday wrote about the death of his Mother and Joey Jordison (Slipknot / Murderdolls).  Lyrically the song is relatable to anyone who’s suffered through major loss and this power ballad is the perfect song to close this record on.  “Love and loyalty, it will never expire” is the lyric that stands out in this song.

Wednesday 13 and company have created an amazing record with “Horrifier” and if I’m being honest this one is a career defining release because the writing and music are top notch.
