Gina Schock is best known as the drummer for The Go-Go’s and was inducted in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame in 2021. Gina is a Maryland girl and got her first taste of being in a band when she was hand picked by John Waters to play drums in “Edie and The Eggs” which featured actress Edith Massey on vocals. Schock joined The Go-Go’s in 1979 replacing the bands original drummer Elissa Bello.
Schock was a member of The Go-Go’s until the group disbanded in 1985. The band reformed a few years later in 1990 and 1994.
Schock was seen on TV several times as the drummer for a-ha (“Take on Me”) but she was never an official member of the band. Schock co-wrote “Breakout” with Ted Bruner and Trey Vittetoe and that song was made a hit by Miley Cyrus. The song was also recorded by Katy Perry. Schock also co-wrote “Naturally” which was recorded in 2009 and made a hit by Selena Gomez.
In 2021 Schock released the book “Made In Hollywood: All Access With The Go-Go’s”.
Schock performed a free show in Baltimore, Maryland at the Hard Rock Cafe on April 14, 2023 and joining her onstage was Stone Horses/Charm City Devils frontman John Allen (Drums and vocals/guitar), Fells Point's favorite son Ed Lauer on guitar, Aster Pheonyx on guitar, Steve Ports, and Jay Swanson. Their set was fun and included “Breakout”, an unreleased song, and several Go-Go’s classics including “We Got The Beat”, “Vacation”, & “Our Lips Are Sealed”.
The evening started out with Schock doing a Q&A session and during that she spoke on her early days in Baltimore, how she got her start in music, and what it was like to be in The Go-Go’s. The live set started with Gina singing lead vocals. On drums was Stone Horses leader John Allen and towards the end of the set Allen stepped from behind the drum kit to play guitar and sing. “We Got The Beat” was given a slightly different vibe than the original version and was definitely one of the highlights of the night.
Immediately following the live set Schock went to the Hard Rock Cafe shop and signed autographs for fans. At her merch table fans could buy signed drum heads, signed drumsticks, signed books, signed 8X10’s, and rare Schock/Go-Go’s shirts.
