Husband and wife duo Blaine Cartwright and Ruyter Suys are the core of Nashville Pussy with bassist Bonnie Buitrago and newest member, Drummer Ben Thomas.
The band are on tour in support of their latest release “Pleased To Eat You” and their stop in Baltimore was highly anticipated since they had not headlined a show in Baltimore for several years.
The best way to describe Nashville Pussy is that they are a proper mix of “Tits N Tudes”
Blaine Cartwright is a frontman like no other; his midwest charm and southern crudeness give him a swagger and his singing/ guitar playing made him the rockstar he is today.
Lead guitarist Ruyter Suys is a female version of Angus Young with boobs! Her playing is as wild as her hair and her audience interaction is uncanny.
Bassist Bonnie Buitrago is a beast on bass and her bass lines hold the songs together. Drummer Ben Thomas adds new life to Nashville Pussy and his drumming is equal parts intensity and passion; his drum solo had the crowd captivated and even Ruyter seemed amazed as Ben pounded the hell out of his kit!
Guitar Wolf were direct support for Nashville Pussy and they were a spectacle to witness. Their guitar tone was sheer noise while the bass/drums held the entire show together. Guitar Wolf are the Japanese equivalence of The Ramones with more guitar bite and highlights of their set included their bass player tossing his bass to the ground so he could crowd surf amongst the 50 people in the audience, the lead singer gave an audience member his guitar to beat up, and if I’m being honest with you, Guitar Wolf are a hard band to explain. You need to experience the Guitar Wolf live show in order to “get” what they are about. If you are close to the stage be aware that you may have a mic stand dropped on you, a band member may jump over you, and at any given point their instruments may be hurled towards you. A Guitar Wolf concert is an experience where you should expect the unexpected.
Nashville Pussy took the stage as “Stanglehold” by Ted Nugent played and their set started with “Pussy Time”.
Nashville Pussy added “I’m So High” to the set when a fan called the song out….Blaine commented that they were not planning on playing the song but because the guy called it out they said, why not?!
Blaine’s Gibson Explorer guitar was equipped with Dirty Finger pick ups and his tone was loud and harsh. Ruyter’s Gibson SG was stripped down to one pick up and one volume knob.
Throughout the night Blaine, Ben, and Ruyter took swigs off a Bottle of Jack Daniels and towards the end of the set Blaine took off his cowboy hat, filled it with beer, and then drank all of the beer from his hat!
At the merch table all Nashville Pussy shirts were $20 and there was a large assortment of pins, belt buckles, vinyl, cd’s, and signed photos.
Blaine commented that the show was actually a legendary show for Baltimore and he thanked everyone for showing up. The sad reality was that Slayer, Michael Schenker, and 69 Eyes were all performing on the same night in Maryland so fans had to choose which show to see. The Nashville Pussy show was small but packed a huge punch!
